The short answer
CFS is short for Close Friends Story. Instagram lets you share a story with a small list. That list is called Close Friends. A story sent to that list is a CFS. Viewers see a green ring around your profile photo, not the usual pink one.
People use the term in captions and DMs too. “Check my CFS” means “look at my Close Friends story.” “Add me to your CFS” means “put me on your Close Friends list.”
How to tell if you are on someone’s Close Friends list
There is no list you can check. You find out from the story itself.
- Their story ring is green instead of pink or orange.
- When you open the story, a green Close Friends label shows at the top.
- On a post or Reel, a green star badge means it was shared with Close Friends only.
If you never see a green ring, you may not be on their list. Or they have not shared a CFS lately. There is no way to tell which.
How to make a Close Friends Story
- Open Instagram and swipe right, or tap the plus icon and choose Story.
- Take a photo or video, or pick one from your camera roll.
- Add text, music or stickers if you want.
- At the bottom, tap the green Close Friends button.
The story goes only to your list. Your other followers do not see it. They are not told it exists. You can share a normal story and a CFS on the same day. They show as two separate rings.
How to add people to Close Friends on Instagram
You can build the list before you post, or from the share screen.
- Go to your profile and tap the menu (three lines).
- Tap Close Friends.
- Search for a name and tap the circle next to it to add.
- Tap Done.
To remove someone, open the same list and tap the circle again. You can also do it from a profile. Tap Following, then Add to Close Friends. There is no limit on how many people you can add.
Does Instagram notify people about Close Friends?
No. Nobody gets a notification when you add or remove them. They do not get one when you share a CFS either. It appears in their story tray like any other story. That is why the feature works for private moments. On our own accounts, people only notice a change when the green ring stops showing up.
Your list is private. People on it cannot see who else is on it. Instagram explains the feature in the Help Center.
Close Friends for posts and Reels
Since 2023, Close Friends is not just for stories. You can share a feed post or a Reel with your list only.
- Make your post or Reel as usual.
- On the final share screen, tap Audience.
- Choose Close Friends.
- Share.
List members see the post on your profile with a green star badge. Everyone else cannot see it. You can change the audience later from the post menu.
Other meanings of CFS
On Instagram, CFS almost always means Close Friends Story. Outside the app it can mean other things. In a medical setting it means chronic fatigue syndrome. In some DMs it means “comment for shoutout,” mostly on meme pages. Context makes it clear. If you see it next to a green ring, it is the story feature.
Why people use Close Friends
The list gives you a quieter space inside a public account. Creators share raw clips there, or test a Reel first. Friends use it for daily updates meant for a few people. It pairs well with other privacy tools, like a hidden followers list. To learn who actually watched, see our guide on who can see your Reel views.
If your public stories feel empty, the fix is more followers, not a smaller list. Track your count for free with our Instagram follower count checker. Famoid also sells Instagram followers, delivered slowly over days.
