Instagram Engagement Rate Calculator

Type your followers, likes and comments. Get your engagement rate in a second, with a plain-English read on what the number means.

The number brands quote.

Type your numbers above. The rate updates as you type. Nothing is sent anywhere.

How to use the calculator

  1. Open your last 10 posts. Write down the likes and comments on each one.
  2. Work out the average per post. Type the averages above, with your follower count.
  3. Read the rate. Switch to By views for Reels, since most Reel viewers do not follow you.

One post gives a noisy number. Ten posts give a fair one. Use the same posts and the same rule each month, and the change over time will mean something.

The formula

Engagement rate by followers is the number brands and tools quote:

(likes + comments) ÷ followers × 100

Example. You have 10,000 followers. Your posts get about 300 likes and 20 comments. That is 320 ÷ 10,000 × 100 = 3.2%.

Engagement rate by views uses the same top line, divided by views instead of followers. It tells you how the people who actually saw the post reacted. It is the better number for Reels, and it is what many creators mean when they say "my Reels engagement".

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?

Instagram does not publish a target. The bands below are a common rule of thumb, and they work for most accounts:

Rate by followersReadWhat it usually means
Under 1%LowCommon for big accounts, or posts the feed did not push.
1% to 3%AverageWhere most accounts sit.
3% to 6%GoodPeople who see your posts react to them.
Above 6%HighSmall, close audiences and viral posts land here.

Size matters. An account with 2,000 followers often scores 5% or more. An account with 500,000 followers often scores under 1%, and that is normal. Compare yourself with accounts of the same size, not with everyone.

Why your rate is low, and what to do

  • Followers who no longer open the app. Every account collects them. Your rate falls even when your posts do not change. Use our free follower counter to watch the real count over time.
  • Posting when your followers are asleep. Insights shows when they are online. See the best time to post on Instagram.
  • No reason to comment. Ask a real question in the caption. Reply to every comment in the first hour.
  • Reels judged by follower count. Switch to the views formula. A Reel with 50,000 views and 1,500 likes is doing fine, even on a 5,000-follower account.
  • A sudden drop. Check whether you are shadowbanned before you change anything else.

Where to find the numbers

Likes and comments sit under every post. Views and reach need a professional account. Open your profile, tap Professional dashboard, then Insights, and pick a post. Instagram shows views, reach, likes, comments, saves and shares. It does not show a single engagement rate, which is why this page exists.

If you want a bigger audience for the posts that already work, Famoid sells Instagram followers, likes and views, delivered through ads at a natural pace, with no password needed.

Quick answers

The short version, for people in a hurry.

Add the likes and comments on a post. Divide by your follower count. Multiply by 100. For a fair number, use the average of your last 10 posts, not one post.
As a rule of thumb, 1% to 3% is average, 3% to 6% is good, and above 6% is high. Small accounts usually score higher than big ones. There is no official number from Instagram.
Use followers when a brand asks for your rate. Use views for Reels, because most people who watch a Reel do not follow you. Both are correct. Just say which one you used.
They can. Many brands only count likes and comments. Some add saves and shares. The calculator lets you add them if you want. Use the same rule every time so your numbers compare.
No. Insights shows reach, views, likes, comments, saves and shares for each post, but not a single rate. You need a professional account to see Insights. This calculator does the math for you.
Yes. It is free, needs no login, and does the math on your device. Nothing you type is sent to us or stored.
