How to use the calculator
- Open your last 10 videos. Note the views, likes, comments and shares on each.
- Work out the average per video. Type the averages above.
- Read the rate. Keep By views selected. It is the honest number on TikTok.
Ten videos give a fair number. One viral video does not. Repeat the check each month with the same rule, and you will see the real trend.
The formula
TikTok engagement rate by views:
(likes + comments + shares) ÷ views × 100
Example. A video gets 40,000 views, 2,000 likes, 90 comments and 150 shares. That is 2,240 ÷ 40,000 × 100 = 5.6%.
The rate by followers divides by your follower count instead. On TikTok it can look strange, because the For You feed sends most views to people who do not follow you. A 1,000-follower account with a 100,000-view video would score hundreds of percent. That is why TikTok creators and brands mostly use the views version.
What is a good engagement rate on TikTok?
TikTok does not publish a target. These bands are a common rule of thumb for the rate by views:
| Rate by views | Read | What it usually means |
|---|---|---|
| Under 1% | Low | People scroll past. The hook or the topic is not landing. |
| 1% to 3% | Average | Normal for most videos that get feed views. |
| 3% to 6% | Good | Viewers stop, react and share. |
| Above 6% | High | Videos that the feed keeps pushing tend to sit here. |
Shares matter more than likes on TikTok. A video with fewer likes but many shares often keeps spreading. If you track one thing, track shares per view.
Why your rate is low, and what to do
- Weak first seconds. Watch time decides what the feed pushes. Start with the point, not an intro. See how to get more views on TikTok.
- No reason to comment. End with a question, or leave a small gap for people to fill.
- Posting at the wrong time. TikTok Studio shows when your viewers are active. See the best time to post on TikTok.
- Views stuck at zero. That is not a rate problem. Check whether you are shadowbanned or whether the video is under review.
- A follower count that no longer matches reality. Track it with the free TikTok live counter.
Where to find the numbers
Views, likes, comments and shares sit under every video. For averages, open your profile, tap the Menu button, then TikTok Studio, then Analytics. TikTok shows the totals per video and per week, but not one engagement rate, which is why this page exists.
