If I delete the Instagram app, what happens?
The app is just a window to your account. Your account lives on Instagram’s servers. Remove the window and the account is still there. Your profile stays public. Your followers stay. Your DMs stay. People can still tag you, message you and follow you.
We see this question a lot from customers. They delete the app to take a break and panic the next day. There is no need. Log back in and it all returns.
What you keep
Everything that was ever uploaded or sent stays. That includes:
- Your profile, username and bio
- All posts, Reels and the story archive
- Followers and the accounts you follow
- Direct messages, both sent and received
- Saved posts and collections
- Likes and comments you left on other posts
- Your order history and any linked Facebook account
The Instagram Help Center is clear on this. Only the delete account option removes data.
What you lose
A few things live only on the phone. Those go with the app.
- Unposted drafts. A post or Reel you started but never shared is gone.
- Unsent message text. Anything typed in a DM box but not sent.
- The saved login. You will need your password next time.
- Cache and downloaded media. This is fine. It is just copies.
- Notification settings on that phone. They reset on reinstall.
Before you delete, post or save any drafts you care about. Make sure you know your password. If you use two-factor, keep your backup codes.
If you delete the Instagram app, does it delete your account?
No. These are two separate actions. Uninstalling removes the app. Deleting the account removes your data from Instagram. Many people mix them up.
If you want a break but not a full delete, use deactivate. It hides your profile, posts and comments until you log in again. Nothing is removed.
How to deactivate or delete your account
These are the real steps if removing the app is not what you meant.
- Open Instagram and go to your profile.
- Tap the menu, then Settings and activity.
- Tap Accounts Center at the top.
- Tap Personal details → Account ownership and control.
- Tap Deactivation or deletion.
- Pick your account, then choose Deactivate or Delete.
You can also do this on the web at accountscenter.instagram.com.
Deactivate is instant and can be undone any time by logging in. Delete starts a 30-day wait. Log in during those 30 days and the delete is cancelled. After 30 days, the account and its data are gone for good.
How to reinstall Instagram and log back in
- Open the App Store or Google Play.
- Search for Instagram and tap Install.
- Open the app and tap Log in.
- Enter your username, email or phone number, plus your password.
- Enter the two-factor code if asked.
Your feed, followers and messages load as before. If the login fails, see Instagram login not working.
Why people delete the app
Most people do it for one of three reasons. To take a break. To fix a bug. Or to free up space.
For a break, deactivating is safer. Nobody can see your profile while you rest.
For a bug, reinstalling often works. Try clearing the Instagram cache first. It is faster and keeps your login.
For space, the app itself is small. The cache is what grows. Clear that instead.
Your followers stay the same number while you are away. You can confirm it any time with our free follower count checker. No login needed. If you want the count to grow while you are gone, our Instagram followers, likes and views only need your public username.
