First: is TikTok down?
Run our live TikTok status check. It tests TikTok from our servers and from your connection, and shows the last 24 hours. If TikTok is down, wait. Most outages end within a few hours. Your account, videos and drafts are safe.
If TikTok is up, the problem is on your side. Keep going.
The three fixes to try first
- Close the app fully and reopen it. Swipe it away from recent apps, wait ten seconds, open it again.
- Switch networks. Wi-Fi to mobile data or the other way. Turn off any VPN.
- Update TikTok. Old versions break after TikTok changes something server-side.
Clear the TikTok cache
This fixes more problems than anything else.
- Open TikTok and tap Profile.
- Tap the menu (three lines) in the top right.
- Tap Settings and privacy.
- Scroll to Free up space.
- Tap Clear next to Cache.
It deletes temporary files only. Your videos, drafts, likes and account stay. Our guide to clearing the TikTok cache shows each screen, plus the phone-level steps for Android.
Fix by error message
“Something went wrong.” TikTok’s catch-all. Do the three fixes above, then clear the cache. If it keeps coming back, see our TikTok “something went wrong” guide.
“No network connection.” Not always about your internet. It also shows when TikTok is down, when a network blocks TikTok, or with a VPN. Switch networks and turn the VPN off.
“Too many attempts, please try again later.” You did something too fast, like logging in or following many times. Wait an hour.
“This video is currently unavailable.” The video was deleted, set to private, or blocked in your country. Nothing is wrong with your app.
Fix by symptom
Videos will not load but the rest works. Videos come from different servers than comments and profiles. It is often a partial outage. Check the status page. Otherwise turn off data saver: Settings and privacy → Data Saver.
Comments will not load or post. Refresh the video. If comments fail on every video, clear the cache. TikTok also turns off comments on some videos by the creator’s choice.
Search returns nothing. Clear the cache and check your date and time settings. A wrong clock breaks TikTok’s search.
Camera or upload not working. Check that TikTok has camera, microphone and photo permissions in your phone settings. Free up storage. Restart the phone.
Notifications not arriving. Check TikTok’s notification settings in the app and in your phone settings. Battery saver modes can block them.
App lagging or freezing. Free up storage, close other apps, and restart your phone. If it still lags, reinstall.
TikTok and VPNs
TikTok blocks many VPN addresses. A VPN can also put you in a region where some videos or features are not available. If TikTok acts strange, turn the VPN off first.
When TikTok is blocked where you are
Some schools, offices and countries block TikTok. If it works on mobile data but never on one Wi-Fi network, that network is blocking it. There is nothing wrong with the app.
Reinstall as a last step
Delete TikTok and install it again. Your account and posted videos are on TikTok’s servers. Drafts are not. Drafts live only on your phone and are gone if you delete the app. Post or save them first. If a reinstall does not fix it, report the bug at TikTok’s help center.
After it works again
