The short answer
Instagram active status is accurate about one thing: when the app was last open. It is not accurate about what the person was doing. Active now can mean they are reading your chat. It can also mean the app sat open in a pocket. Treat the time as real and the meaning as a guess.
What active status shows
Instagram calls this feature Activity Status. When it is on, a green dot or a time stamp appears next to your profile picture in messages. Instagram’s help page lists these examples:

You may also see other wording, like Active today. Instagram does not list every label. They all come from the same clock: the last moment the app was open.
Inside an open chat, you can see more. Instagram gives the examples In the chat and In the camera. Those tell you what the person is doing right now, but only while you both have the chat open.
Who can see your status
Not everyone. Instagram says two groups can see it:
- People you follow.
- Anyone you send direct messages to.
Both of you must have Activity Status on. If either one turns it off, neither sees the other. Instagram’s launch post also says the dot appears in the direct inbox and in your friend list when you share a post from your feed.
Instagram’s help pages only describe activity status inside messaging. The Notes row sits at the top of the same inbox. Instagram does not say the dot shows there, so don’t count on it.
Why the status looks wrong
Instagram does not publish how the clock works. So these are the usual reasons it looks off, not rules from Instagram.
- The app is open in the background. Someone switches to another app without closing Instagram. Their status may still say active.
- More than one device. A person logged in on a phone and a laptop looks active when either one has the app open.
- The status is cached. Your inbox may show an older label until it refreshes. Pull down to reload and check again.
- The other person turned it off. If you see no dot and no time, they may have hidden their status. You’ll also see nothing if you turned off your own.
- A shared account. Two people using one login look like one very active person.
None of these mean Instagram is lying. It is reporting the app, not the human.
What active status cannot tell you
People read a lot into that green dot. Here is what it does not show:
- Whether the person saw your message. Only Seen shows that.
- Whether they are in your chat. Active now covers the whole app.
- Whether they are ignoring you. A dot is a dot, not a mood.
- Who they are talking to. Instagram never shows that.

How to turn off active status
The setting is called Show activity status. These are the steps from Instagram’s help page:
- Go to your profile.
- Tap the menu in the top right.
- Below How others can interact with you, tap Messages and story replies.
- Tap Show activity status.
- Switch Show activity status off.
The change is instant. You can still send and get messages. The only difference is the dot and the time stamp are gone.
One trade-off to know: once it’s off, you can’t see when anyone else is active either. Instagram is clear on this. There is no setting that hides you while showing everyone else.

How to read it well
Use active status as a rough clock, not a lie detector.
- Active now plus Seen means they read your message recently.
- Active now alone means the app is open. That’s all.
- A time stamp from hours ago is safe to trust as “not around.”
- No status at all means one of you has it off.
