The short answer
You cannot see who viewed your Instagram profile. Instagram does not keep a visitor list for any account type. No setting turns one on, and no outside app can get it. What you can see is who watched your story, who is in your Live, and a profile visit count in Insights.
What Instagram shows and what it hides
Instagram’s help pages describe every view metric the app has. None of them names profile visitors. Here is the split.

How to see who viewed your Instagram story
Stories are the one place Instagram lists names. The steps come from Instagram’s story viewers page.
- Open your story.
- Swipe up on the screen.
- You see the number of views and the usernames of everyone who watched each photo or video.
Only you can see this list. A few details help you read it:
- The list stays open for 48 hours after you post.
- After 24 hours, go to your profile, tap Menu, then Archive. Open the story and swipe up.
- The view count includes replays. So the number can be higher than the list of names.
People often think this list is the profile viewer list. It is not. It only covers people who tapped on your story.
Profile visits in Insights: a number, not a list
Instagram Insights include a metric called profile activity. It counts profile visits, follows and website clicks that came from a post or story. It is a total. It never shows who made those visits.
To view Insights you need a public account. Personal and professional accounts both qualify now. Here is the path in the app:
- Go to your profile.
- Tap Professional dashboard or Your dashboard.
- If you don’t see a dashboard, tap More, then Settings & activity, then Insights or Your dashboard.
- Tap any post or story and choose View insights.
Instagram explains each metric on its About insights page. The main ones are:
- Views: how many times your content was played or shown.
- Viewers: how many different accounts saw it at least once.
- Interactions: likes, comments, saves and shares.
- Accounts engaged: how many different accounts interacted.
Reels use the same idea. Views can include replays by the same person, and viewers counts each account once. Neither shows names. See can you see who views your Reels for more.
Live viewers
Live is the closest thing to a real-time viewer list. When you go live, the viewer count sits at the top of the screen. Instagram also warns viewers that the host and other viewers may see that they joined.
After the Live ends, Insights keep the numbers for 30 days. You get viewers, peak viewers at one time, comments, shares and accounts engaged. Again, these are counts. There is no saved list of every name.
One rule to know: Instagram’s help page says you need a public account with 1,000 followers or more to start a Live.
Why “profile viewer” apps do not work
Instagram does not share visitor data with any app or website. There is no hidden list to find. An app that shows you “stalkers” is guessing. Most just copy your follower list and give it a scary label.
The real problem is what they ask for. Instagram’s page on apps that offer likes and followers explains the risk. If you give an app your login, it can:
- Read your private messages.
- Find information about your friends.
- Post spam from your account.
Instagram may also remove engagement those apps create. Accounts that keep using them can be limited, disabled or closed.
If you already typed your password into one of these apps:
- Change your Instagram password now.
- Go to Settings & activity and check the apps and websites connected to your account. Remove any you don’t know.
- Turn on two-factor login.
Does someone know when you view their profile?
No. This works both ways. When you open a profile, the owner gets no alert and no record. They only know if you act: watch their story, join their Live, like, comment, follow or send a message.
So if you were hoping to check on someone in private, you already can. Just don’t tap their story. Instagram’s help page says story owners can always tell who watched.
