The rule
There is no follower rule for Instagram Live. Zero followers, ten followers, ten million. The Live button is there for everyone. This is different from TikTok, which requires 1,000 followers. Our guide on TikTok Live requirements covers that side.
The rules that do exist
Live has no follower minimum, but a few things can still block it.
- Age. You must be at least 13 to have an Instagram account. Teen accounts have extra limits set by Instagram.
- Account standing. Recent rule strikes can remove Live for a while. Check Settings → Account status to see if anything is flagged.
- Updated app. Old versions hide the Live option.
- Connection. Live needs a steady signal. A weak one can fail to start.
Some Live features have their own rules. Badges, which let viewers tip you during a Live, are part of Instagram’s creator monetization tools. Those have eligibility checks, including a follower minimum and an eligible country. Instagram lists the details in the Help Center. Going live itself is open to all.
How to go live on Instagram
- Open the app and swipe right from your feed, or tap the plus button.
- Swipe to Live at the bottom of the camera.
- Add a title if you want one.
- Tap the Live button to start.
You can add a guest, pin a comment, turn comments off, and share a replay when you end. Live videos can run for a long time in one session.
Practice mode
Instagram has a practice mode for Live. It lets you start a Live that only you can see, so you can check your lighting, sound and framing. Look for the audience option before you tap the Live button and choose Practice. It is a good way to run your first Live without anyone watching.
Live with guests
You can invite up to three other people into your Live. Tap the guest icon during the Live and pick someone from your followers or from the viewers. A guest brings their followers too, which is the easiest way to get more viewers on a small account.
Why Lives with few followers get few viewers
Instagram tells your followers when you go live. That is the main way people find a Live. If you have 50 followers, only a few of them are online at any moment. So you may get three viewers. That is normal. It does not mean anything is wrong.
From the accounts we watch, one thing helps more than any other. Post a Story an hour before you go live and say the exact time. Lives with a warning Story get several times the viewers of Lives that start out of nowhere, even at the same follower count.
How to get more viewers on Live
- Pick the right time. Check Professional dashboard → Total followers → Most active times. Go live just before the peak. Our best time to post on Instagram guide has times for each day.
- Announce it. A Story, a post, and a note in your bio the day before.
- Keep a set schedule. Same day, same time, every week. People learn to expect it.
- Go live with a guest. Their followers get notified too.
- Start with a hook. Say what you will cover in the first 30 seconds. New viewers decide fast.
- Share the replay. Post it to your profile so people who missed it can watch later.
Grow the follower base first
A Live is only as big as the crowd who shows up. If you want more viewers, the long-term fix is more followers. Our guide on how to get more followers on Instagram lays out the steps. You can watch your progress with our free Instagram follower count checker.
