It is not accurate about what the person was doing. Active now can mean they are reading your chat. It can also mean the app sat open in a pocket. Treat the time as real and the meaning as a guess. ## What active status shows Instagram calls this feature Activity Status. When it is on, a green dot or a time stamp appears next to your profile picture in messages. So these are the usual reasons it looks off, not rules from Instagram. - **The app is open in the background.** Someone switches to another app without closing Instagram. Their status may still say active. - **More than one device.** A person logged in on a phone and a laptop looks active when either one has the app open. - **The status is cached.** Your inbox may show an older label until it refreshes. Pull down to reload and check again. - **The other person turned it off.** If you see no dot and no time, they may have hidden their status.
