# Instagram Reels Not Working: Fix Reels Not Playing or Loading

Page: https://famoid.com/instagram-reels-not-working/

Reels stop working for four main reasons: Instagram is down, your phone is full, a data saver setting is on, or the app is out of date. Check them in that order.

## First: check if Instagram is down

Run our [live Instagram status check](/is-instagram-down/). Reels are often the first thing to break during an outage. They need more from the servers than photos do. When Instagram has a real outage we see it on our monitor first. Every check fails at once, not just one user. If Instagram is down, wait. Most outages end within a few hours.

If Instagram is up, find your symptom below.

## Instagram Reels not playing

The Reel opens but stays black, spins, or stops after a second. Do these in order.

1. **Switch networks.** Go from Wi-Fi to mobile data or the other way. Turn off any VPN.
2. **Free up storage.** Reels buffer to your phone. A full phone cannot store them. Delete a few videos or apps.
3. **Turn off data saver in Instagram.** Go to Settings and activity → Your app and media → Media quality. Turn off the data saver option.
4. **Turn off low data mode or data saver on your phone.** These settings stop video from loading in the background.
5. **Close the app fully and reopen it.**
6. **Update the app.** Reels change often, and old versions break.

## Instagram Reels not loading

The Reels tab opens but stays blank or shows grey boxes.

1. Pull down to refresh.
2. Check your connection. Run a speed test or open a video elsewhere.
3. Clear the cache. On Android: Settings → Apps → Instagram → Storage → Clear cache. On iPhone, delete and reinstall. Our [clear Instagram cache guide](/how-to-clear-instagram-cache/) has full steps.
4. Restart your phone.
5. Log out and back in.

If the feed also says "Couldn't refresh feed", the problem is your connection, not Reels. See our [couldn't refresh feed guide](/instagram-couldnt-refresh-feed/).

## Instagram Reels not showing at all

The Reels tab is missing, or Reels do not show in your feed.

- **New account.** Instagram can hide some features for the first days.
- **Old app.** Update it. The Reels tab moved more than once.
- **Region.** Reels is not offered in a few countries.
- **Restricted account.** A recent action block or a warning can hide Reels for a while.

If you see a "try again later" message, read our [something went wrong guide](/instagram-something-went-wrong/).

## Reels with no sound

- **iPhone:** flip the silent switch on the side. Reels follow it.
- **Android:** turn up media volume, not ring volume.
- **One Reel only:** its music is not licensed in your country. Nothing is wrong with your phone.
- **Every Reel:** close and reopen the app.

If the music sticker is missing when you make a Reel, see our [Instagram music not working guide](/instagram-music-not-working/).

## Reels not uploading

1. Check your connection. Uploads need a steady signal.
2. Make sure the video is under the limit. Reels can be up to three minutes long on a current app. Old app versions cap lower, so update first.
3. Save the Reel as a draft. Close the app. Open it and post the draft.
4. Turn off "Upload at highest quality" in Media quality for a test.

## Reels not getting views

This is not a bug most of the time. New Reels can take hours to be shown to people. Reach also drops for a day or two after a big outage. If your views are zero for days, check our [Instagram shadowban guide](/instagram-shadowban/). If you want a steady push on a Reel, Famoid sells [Reels views and likes](/instagram-reels/). We only need the post link. No password needed.

## When to report it

If you have a current app, a good connection, free storage, and Reels still fail, report it. Go to Settings and activity → Help → Report a problem. The [Instagram Help Center](https://help.instagram.com/) lists known Reels issues. Meta posts notes about feature rollouts on the [Instagram blog](https://about.instagram.com/blog).

## Quick answers

**Why are my Instagram Reels not working?**

Most often Instagram is down, your connection is weak, or the app is out of date. Run the status check, switch networks, and update the app. Then clear the cache.

**Why are Instagram Reels not playing?**

Reels need room to buffer. A full phone or a data saver setting stops them. Free up storage and turn off data saver in Instagram and on your phone.

**Why are Reels not showing on my Instagram?**

The Reels tab can be missing on very new accounts, on old app versions, or in a few countries. Update the app and wait a few days if the account is new.

**Why do Reels load but have no sound?**

On iPhone, check the silent switch on the side. On Android, turn up media volume. If one Reel is silent, its music may not be licensed in your country.

**Why do my Reels not get views?**

New Reels can take hours to be shown. Reach also drops for a day or two after a big outage. If views are zero for days, check for a shadowban.
