# What Happens When You Restrict Someone on Instagram?

Page: https://famoid.com/how-to-restrict-someone-on-instagram/

Restrict hides that person's comments from everyone except them, moves their messages to your requests folder, and hides your activity status and read receipts from them. They are not notified, and they can still see your posts.

## What does restrict do on Instagram, step by step

Restrict changes four things. Nothing else changes.

1. **Their comments are hidden.** When they comment on your post, only they can see it. You get no notice. You can tap **See comment** to read it, and approve it if you want.
2. **Their DMs move to requests.** New messages from them land in your **Requests** folder, not your inbox. You will not get a notification.
3. **They cannot see your activity status.** No green dot, no "Active now", even if you have it on for everyone else.
4. **They cannot see read receipts.** If you read a message in requests, it will not show as "Seen".

They can still follow you, like your posts, view your stories and tag you. From their side, Instagram looks normal.

## How to restrict someone on Instagram

From their profile:

1. Open the person's profile.
2. Tap the three dots in the top right.
3. Tap **Restrict**.

From a comment:

1. Swipe left on the comment (iPhone) or tap and hold it (Android).
2. Tap the exclamation icon or the three dots.
3. Tap **Restrict**.

From a DM, open the chat, tap their name at the top, and tap **Restrict**. All three paths do the same thing.

## How to unrestrict someone

1. Open their profile and tap the three dots.
2. Tap **Unrestrict**.

You can also see the full list. Go to **Settings and activity**, scroll to **How others can interact with you**, and tap **Restricted**. Remove anyone from there.

## Restrict vs block vs mute

People mix these up. Here is the difference.

| | Restrict | Block | Mute |
|---|---|---|---|
| They know? | No | Not told, but can tell | No |
| They see your posts? | Yes | No | Yes |
| You see their posts? | Yes | No | No, hidden from your feed |
| Their comments | Hidden from others | Cannot comment | Normal |
| Their DMs | Go to requests | Cannot message you | Normal, or muted |
| Your activity status | Hidden from them | Hidden | Normal |

**Mute** is for you. It hides their content from your feed, and they notice nothing.

**Restrict** is for them. It limits what they can do around you, quietly.

**Block** is a wall. They cannot find your profile or contact you. People often work it out. Our guide on [how to know if someone blocked you](/how-to-know-if-someone-blocked-you-on-instagram/) lists the signs they would look for.

## When restrict is the right choice

Restrict was built for bullying. Instagram said so when it launched the feature. It works well for:

- A relative or coworker you cannot block without drama.
- Someone who leaves rude comments under every post.
- An ex you do not want to see your online status.

We use it on our own brand accounts for spam commenters. Their comments sit hidden, and they never come back to complain. No one else sees the mess.

## What the other person notices

Not much. Their comments look posted to them. Their messages look sent. The only real clues are silence and a missing "Seen". If they send a DM and it never gets a reply, they may guess. If you want to check whether your own messages are landing, see [Instagram DMs not working](/instagram-dms-not-working/).

Instagram's help page on [restricting accounts](https://help.instagram.com/) has the current wording for each setting.

If comment spam is your main problem, a clean, active comment section helps more than any setting. Famoid sells [Instagram likes](/insta/) that arrive slowly, and we never ask for your password.

## Quick answers

**If I restrict someone on Instagram, what happens?**

Their comments on your posts are hidden from everyone but them. Their DMs go to message requests. They can no longer see when you are active or when you read a message. They still see your posts and stories.

**What does restrict mean on Instagram?**

It is a quiet middle step between mute and block. You limit what that person can do around you without cutting them off or letting them know.

**If I restrict a friend on Instagram, will they know?**

No. Instagram sends no notice. The only clue is that their comments get no replies and your messages show no 'Seen'.

**Can a restricted person see my posts and stories?**

Yes. Restrict does not hide your content. If you want to hide posts, block them or use Hide story and Close friends.

**How do I unrestrict someone on Instagram?**

Open their profile, tap the three dots, and tap Unrestrict. Or go to Settings and activity, then Restricted, and remove them from the list.
