The green dot and 'Active now' label vanish for everyone. ## How to appear offline on Instagram (iPhone and Android) The setting is called activity status. Turn it off and you look offline to everyone. 1. Open Instagram and go to your profile. 2. Tap the menu (three lines) in the top right. 3. Tap **Settings and activity**. 4. Scroll to **How others can interact with you** and tap **Messages and story replies**. 5. Tap **Show activity status**. 6. Switch **Show activity status** off. The change applies right away. You do not need to log out. On a computer, open instagram.com, click **More**, then **Settings**, then **Messages and story replies**. The same switch is there. ## What people see when you show offline Before, your friends saw a green dot next to your name in their inbox. They also saw "Active now" or "Active 2h ago" under your name. Once the switch is off, all of that goes away. Your name shows with no status at all. Nobody gets a notice that you changed the setting. They just stop seeing the dot. ## The trade-off When you hide your status, you lose the same view of others. You will not see who is active now. You will not see when a friend was last online. Instagram does this on purpose. You cannot hide and watch at the same time. We turned this off on our own test accounts for a month. The only thing we missed was seeing if a friend was around before we sent a message. Most people never notice the difference. ## What appearing offline does not hide This setting is small on purpose. It only hides the green dot and the last-active time. It does not: - Stop people from sending you DMs. - Hide your stories or posts. - Hide read receipts.
